about

A well-known woodland near Oxford, with a folkloric history. Shotover was part of the Wychwood royal forest from around the period of the Domesday Book until 1660 when it became common land. The derivation of the name is debatable. It may have come from Chateau Vert (the name of the nearby royal hunting lodge), but it is now generally held that it derives from the Old English scēot ōfer, a steep slope. We, of course, prefer the popular tradition that it was a hill where an arrow was ‘shot over’ by one of Robin Hood’s merry men. Another legend is about a giant (locally named Bullingdon) who hurled the large spherical stones known as the Giant’s Marbles that can be found in the area of the hill known as The Sandpit.
