about

Not far from Oxford is a RSPB bird reserve, Ot Moor. In 1830 it was embroiled in a series of riots as the rich local landlords commandeered what had previously been common land. These ‘enclosure laws’ were enforced across Britain. We’ve included in this piece of music a well-known anonymous resistance poem that was circulating at that time and was often pinned to trees or fences.

lyrics

They hang the man and flog the woman
Who steals the goose from off the common
Yet let the greater villain loose
Who steals the common from the goose

The law demands that we atone
When we take things we do not own
But leaves the lords and ladies fine
Who take things that are yours and mine
